Nut shells, wood, coconut shells, fruit seeds, and coal are heat-treated (carbonized) without air and activated by steam at high temperatures. (For activation, high temperature steam is usually used, even though zinc chloride, magnesium chloride, calcium chloride and phosphoric acid can be used instead.) When wood charcoal is activated by vacuum or air, steam or other activators at 350 to 1000°C, the adsorption amount is increased by more than 100 times. As described, activated carbon is produced by activation to improve adsorption performance.

Activated carbon with the fast adsorption rate owing having the smallest particles. However, it is difficult to handle. Mainly used for refinement, food industry, and catalyst carrier water treatment.
